Fantastic Fall Golf

Fall leafs that make it tough to leave.

Fall is a beautiful time of year for golf in the Muskoka region –  the ancient woodland scenery routinely roars to life with explosive vistas  beginning late September all the way through until winter starts knocking on mother nature’s door. The radiant treetops never fail to create beautiful backdrops across the region, and even more notably on the already impressive golf courses the area has to offer. If you’ve had the privilege of playing here this time of year, you know the electric feeling that takes hold of you when looking up to admire a perfectly struck tee-ball bombed over the illuminating trees of a dogleg right. Here are just a few pictures that will provide a taste of what to expect when heading out for a round of fall golf in beautiful cottage country.

North Granite Ridge – Port Sydney

Hole #18 at North Granite Ridge is a 426 yard par 4 from the tips – handicapped as the 4th toughest hole on the track. The challenge here is finding the fairway on the left side so you’re not blocked with your approach by the tall pine on the right. Be sure to avoid the fairway bunker on the left though, or else you’ll find yourself with a lengthy second shot to the dance floor.

Muskoka Bay Club Resort – Gravenhurst

Hole #6 at Muskoka Bay Club Resort is a 221 yard par 3 from the tips – handicapped as the 17th toughest hole on the track. Make sure to dial one in on this tee ball since there’s plenty of trouble on either side of the green. Hit the ball left and you’ll be happy finding one of the three bunkers – hit one right and watch the ball kick in any direction it wants after connecting with a piece of the Canadian Shield.

Bigwin Island Golf Course – Baysville

Hole #6 at Bigwin Island Golf Club is a 462 yard par 4 from the tips – handicapped as the 9th hardest hole on the track. This is the obvious choice since it’s nicknamed ‘The Look Out’, but you’ll find equally impressive views around the property. Be sure to keep the pace of play as it’s easy to lose sense of time when taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Huntsville Downs Golf Course – Huntsville

#5 at Huntsville Downs Golf Course is a 178 yard par 3 from the tips – handicapped as the toughest hole on the track. You don’t want to be struggling with distance control on this one, that’s for sure. Massive bunkers are strategically placed all around the green forcing you with one option – hit your target.

South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club – Bracebridge

#15 at South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club is a 476 yard par 5 from the tips – handicapped as the 9th toughest hole on the track. A very reachable dogleg right with two options, shape it or airmail it over the trees – both will work. Hitting into a front pin on your approach is the most favorable pin location since being long of the green will result in a lost ball in almost every scenario.

Seguin Valley Golf Club – Parry Sound

#7 at Seguin Valley Golf Club is a 212 yard par 3 from the tips – handicapped as the 7th toughest hole on the track. Being anything but perfect on this tee ball can result in a pit-stop at the drop zone halfway over the bridge.

Deerhurst Highlands Golf Resort – Huntsville

#3 at Deerhurst Highlands Golf Resort is a 201 yard par 3 from the tips- handicapped as the 15th toughest hole on the track. If you find your ball diverting from your intended path, just hope it ends up left. There’s plenty of trouble right with a severe slope and two bunkers waiting to take your ball hostage.

Eagle Lake Golf Course – South River

#2 at Eagle Lake Golf Course is a 476 yard par 5 from the tips – handicapped as the 8th toughest hole on the track. A reachable straight par 5 with room to miss left, but trouble to the right. Be cautious when hitting your approach as the green takes a severe drop from the fairway requiring you to carefully smooth one in.

The Rock Golf Club – Minett

#5 at The Rock Golf Club is a 155 yard par 3 from the tips – handicapped as the 17th toughest hole on the track. With such a massive green your strategy can drastically change given the pin location – best case scenario being a front and centre pin location that favorably takes the beach out of play.

Deer Run Golf Course – McDougall

Hole #12 at Deer Run Golf Course a 393 yard par 4 from the tips – handicapped as the 8th toughest hole on the track. A very intimidating tee shot if you find yourself spraying anything but straight – in which case club down and just get one in play because it does open up, making a longer iron into the green not as difficult as it looks.

Scenic Holes Like No Others in Canada

Turning the Scenery Up to Eleven

Muskoka can definitely boast of being home to truly scenic golf experiences. From dogleg lefts carved from century-old trees to the Canadian Shield splitting fairways in two, its basically impossible to complain about the view when you play here. World famous golf architects such as Thomas McBroom and Sir Nick Faldo have used Ontario’s cottage country as their creative canvas to develop spectacular tracks, within which you’ll encounter breathtaking holes that are transcendent in their design.  Here are some epic holes to check out to really encounter the best of this unique landscape:

Bigwin Island Golf Club – Baysville

Photo Credit: Bigwin Island Golf Club

Hole #6 at Bigwin Island Golf Club is a 462 yard par 4 from the tips – handicapped as the 9th hardest hole on the track. Rightfully nicknamed ‘The Lookout’, this hole provides a beautiful vista of the Lake of Bays through its elevated tee deck. Click here to check out pictures of ‘The Lookout’ and each of the other 17 stunning holes at the beautiful Bigwin Island Golf Club.

Deerhurst Highlands Golf Resort – Huntsville

Hole #1 at Deerhurst Highlands Golf Resort is a 374 yard par 4 from the tips – handicapped as the 13th hardest hole on the track. The elevated tee box on this downhill dogleg right provides a stunning view of Peninsula Lake. Setting yourself up in good position for the second shot is key on this hole as the fairway is almost entirely sloped to the green creating an uneven lie.

North Granite Ridge Golf Club – Port Sydney

Photo Credit: North Granite Ridge Golf Club

Hole #5 at North Granite Ridge Golf Club is a 372 yard par 4 from the tips – handicapped as the 9th hardest hole on the track. An elevated tee deck provides a remarkable view of the treetops – even more notably in the fall. With the approach shot into an elevated two-tier green, distance control in company of ball placement is key.

The Lake Joseph Club – Port Carling

Photo Credit: The Lake Joseph Club

Hole #9 at The Lake Joseph Club is a 475 yard par 4 – handicapped as the hardest hole on the track. A downhill dogleg right with a view of Lake Joseph, the tee shot requires you to thread the needle with your drive to be left with a position ‘A’ approach shot.

Oak Bay Golf Club – Port Severn

Photo Credit: Oak Bay Golf Club

Hole #6 at Oak Bay Golf Club is a 167 yard par 3 from the tips – handicapped as the 5th hardest hole on the track. With a body of water separating the green from the tee blocks, a rock face emerging from the water to the rough, and the inclusion of two bunkers on either side of the green – #6 at Oak Bay Golf Club deserves the title of both a scenic and placement shot hole.

The Ridge at Manitou Golf Club – McKellar

Photo Credit: The Ridge at Manitou Golf Club

Hole #18 at The Ridge at Manitou is a 503 yard par 5 from the tips – handicapped as the 8th hardest hole on the track. This downhill dogleg left is the definition of a picturesque finishing hole with the backdrop of the 18th green looking over Lake Manitouwabing and the alluring clubhouse to the right.

The Rock Golf Club – Minett

Photo Credit: The Rock Golf Course

Hole #12 at The Rock Golf Course is a 422 yard par 4 from the tips – handicapped as the 8th hardest hole on the track. This Sir Nick Faldo design is a dogleg right over a cliff with a downhill approach shot into a welcoming green with room to miss on the right, distance and placement control on this hole will be rewarded.

Rocky Crest Golf Club – MacTier

Photo Credit: Rocky Crest Golf Club

Hole #6 at Rocky Crest Golf Club is a 569 yard par 5 from the tips – handicapped as the 3rd hardest hole on the track. This hole requires a tee ball that carries over 180 yards to clear the magnificent granite ravine that separates the tee block from the fairway. It isn’t difficult to remember you’re golfing within the Canadian Shield on a golf course such as Rocky Crest, and even more so when on a hole such as #6 since the green’s protected by rock on the right and a steep drop off to the left.

Seguin Valley Golf Club – Parry Sound

Photo Credit: Seguin Valley Golf Club

Hole #7 at Seguin Valley Golf Club is a 212 yard par 3 from the tips – handicapped as the 11th hardest hole on the track. This hole is unlike any other in the region as the tee box and the green are connected by a long winding bridge; and to go one step further, the drop zone is placed halfway on the bridge that crosses McCrae Lake. To see more of Seguin Valley Golf Club check out the virtual tour of their 18 unforgettable holes.

South Muskoka Curling and Golf ClubBracebridge

Photo Credit: South Muskoka Curling & Golf Club

Hole #14 at South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club is a 152 yard par 3 from the tips – handicapped as the 17th hardest hole on the track. A relatively short par 3 in comparison to most, the tee box to green is separated by a little pond with a fountain in the middle making for a nice view and a constant sound of pouring water. Taking note of pin position is critical on this severely sloped two-tier green. To view aerial footage of #14 click here.

Taboo Muskoka – Gravenhurst

Hole #7 at Taboo Muskoka is a 218 yard par 3 from the tips – handicapped as the 11th hardest hole on the track. This par 3 is chiseled between two immense walls of pink granite, meaning if you miss just slightly left or right your ball can take a very unpredictable kick – not to mention the road-rash it’ll likely acquire!

Hole number 15 is the signature Par 3 at Oak Bay Golf Club. Shortly after the course opened for play this hole was ranked as one of the 9 must play holes in all of Canada in a Globe & Mail article. It has everything the course has to offer in one hole, water, wind, Canadian Shield and the scenic beauty of views out towards Georgian Bay.

Mark DeActis, General Manager and Director of Golf at South Muskoka Golf and Curling Club

My favourite hole is the Par 3, 14th.  It measures 152 from the black tees and plays over water to a green protected by bunkers on the left and right hand side.  A challenging hole, but I love it!

Drew Rachar, General Manager and Course Superintendent at The Ridge at Manitou

Hole 6 at The Ridge at Manitou

My favourite hole at The Ridge at Manitou is #6.  To me it has a great flow and feel; everything is laid out in front of you so there are no blind areas.  The fairway is fairly generous but if you spray it left you run the risk of being in the bunker for you second shot.  For most people though, Hole #18 is their favorite hole and I think it is one of the best finish holes around.

Spencer Morland, Associate Golf Professional at The Rock Golf Club

My favorite hole at the rock is the 10th.  Not only is it a picturesque hole that can been seen from the clubhouse, but it is also a sound designed hole. Incorporating rock cropping, great bunkering, and an undulating green, this hole sums up Muskoka Golf in 389 yards.

Bruce Rogerson, Head Professional at North Granite Ridge Golf Club

Hole #18 is a feature hole here at North Granite Ridge playing at 426 yards back towards the picturesque clubhouse. It demands a straight drive and accurate approach into a well-protected green. A par 4 here is always a great score. Number 18 always leaves you wanting more!

Hole 16 at Rocky Crest Golf Club

Chris Near, Head Professional at Rocky Crest Golf Club

My favorite hole here at Rocky Crest is #16. In my opinion, #16 exudes all that golf in Muskoka has to offer. From an elevated tee golfers are treated to a fantastic looking tee shot with a rock outcroppings in the middle of the fairway, a large bunker to the left and a marsh area that spans the entire right side of the hole. This hole is the ultimate balance between aesthetic beauty and playability!

Courses of Georgian Bay and Parry Sound

Within the Golf Muskoka are the courses around Georgian Bay and Parry Sound.  This area is filled with great courses offering unique golf experiences.  These courses are kept in pristine condition which makes an interesting contrast to the natural and rugged landscapes that surround them.

Fall Golf in Muskoka

Written by Ron Webb, PGA of Canada Life Member

FALL GOLF IN MUSKOKA… WOW… once you have played golf in the fall season, you will return many times.  Fall golf in Muskoka is… phenomenal colours, comfortable temperatures,  prime golf course conditions, abundant tee times, your own pace of play, special fall greens fee rates and NO MUSKOKA  BUGS!!!

Options for your golf vacation in Muskoka range from Golf Trails, Stay and Play Packages or NorthGraniteRidge4book your own customized plan. One thing for sure, you are guaranteed to play some of the finest courses in Canada. There are close to thirty courses awaiting you in Muskoka.

For those looking for a quick round there are several nine hole courses ranging from the classic Bracebridge Golf Club to the ae
sthetically pleasing Diamond in the Ruff (don’t fall asleep in the comfy Muskoka chairs).  There is the campers choice – Eagle Lake, or the superbly conditioned Fairways at Kirrie GlenThe Sands is a challenging nine holes on Taboo’s property and the Almaguin Highlands Golf and Country Club or Muskoka Woodlands are great options if you are looking for a quick nine!

MuskokaBay5-628x375

Spectacular scenery awaits you at many of the courses featuring Muskoka granite. You will be in awe as you stand on the 6th tee at Bigwin Island, hit through the narrow opening in the rock walls at Muskoka Bay or gaze out at the vista on the first tee at Deerhurst Highlands (don’t pass up Deerhurst Lakeside if you have time). Several of the more recently constructed  courses in the area  such as  Rocky Crest, Oak Bay, Lake Joseph, Taboo, Grandview, The Rock, and The Ridge at Manitou (just wait until you turn the corner on # 18 !) have made use of the natural Muskoka / Canadian shield features in their design and you will be faced with shot making not found anywhere else.

Several of the established courses in Muskoka have undergone major renovations and projects. Sequin ValleySequinValley1-710x375 (play the floating bridge!!) has completed a spectacular clubhouse and the course is always in top condition with several unique Muskoka – type holes and includes their own family of resident bears (friendly and love to watch you hit the ball). Deer Run has added a second, very different, nine holes.  North Granite Ridge has also added a new clubhouse to complement their outstanding layout with many challenges. The “ grandaddies “ of Muskoka Golf, Windermere, South Muskoka, Parry Sound GC and Muskoka Lakes are through their busy time of the year and provide classic Muskoka courses.  South Muskoka has added several new tees and greens rebuilds as has Windermere.  One of the best par 3’s in Muskoka can be found at Windermere as you stand high above the green before you head into the valley for a series of holes. For a change of pace, try the links style course just outside of Bracebridge, Muskoka Highlands. The fescue will be down a bit in the fall and you will play some of the finest greens in the area.
