Hole More Putts – Putting Drill at Home to Improve Your Stroke

Winter is certainly with us in Ontario and golfers everywhere are getting itchy that they cannot improve their game and enjoy the good weather on our great Muskoka golf courses. However, there are many things you can still do over the next couple of months to improve your golf game at home and keep excited for the new golf season and not wood too much about spending the first few weeks blowing off the cobwebs “finding your golf swing” and getting your “feel back” on and around the greens and ultimately be able to hole more putts.

So over the next couple of months we will provide some great golf tips to improve your game this winter from the putting stroke, right through to improving your swing for distance from the comfort of your nice warm home

First up is improving your putting stroke. This is often ignored when golfers think of being rusty, but 50% of your scores are made on the green so why not improve your short game and putting over the next couple of months?

When the greens are covered in snow there is actually a lot you can do to work on your putting stroke and really being able to hole mole putts there are lots of drills you can do at home on your carpet or in the office but today we going to show you we going to explain one very simple one that wouldn’t have you stressing about you stroke or holding those eight footers for pars

A good putting stroke is one that is accurate and more importantly consistent

A very important factor that’s often ignored in putting is having consistently to strike the ball out of the sweet spot golf is often tend to forget the importance of this when it comes to the stroke on the greens even though they know it’s very important with the drivers and the iron.

Your putter is no different.

If you strike your putts out of the toe this will cause a gear effect and open up the face at impact and missing the putts to the right.Putting1

Likewise if you strike your putts out of the heel it’s going to more often than not pull the putt to the left and if you’re doing this regularly you’re going to have to make many compensations to try to adjust through the stroke so you don’t pull it or push it

So how do we get consistent with the flat stick and strike your putts more often out of the sweet spot in your putting stroke?

Well all you need to do is place two can of beans, tuna, vegetables, or some cups. Anything really you can find.

Putting3

Place a ball in between the two objects as see in the picture, (depending on how good or confident you are you can make the space between each end the heel and toe of putter wider for more forgiveness.

You can aim for a specific object or just putt towards a wall to practice distance control but the idea is that you want to try to hit the putt out of the sweet spot without touching either side of those cans.

Putting2

When you try and make a nice smooth stroke without trying to guide it through you will be on your way to having a nice accelerating consistent stroke that will give you feedback to know when you’re either coming across or into the ball at the wrong angle

So all you need to do is practice this drill to improve your putting stroke, hit more out of the sweet spot so you get a better roll on the greens and ultimately hole more putts and by the time the Muskoka golf courses open you will be a vastly better putter than you were last season.

Golf Muskoka Practice

Golf Practice Tips – The Best Practice You Can Do

Byron Nelson used to say that the best golf practice he ever did was at 4 o’clock in the morning, in bed, before a tournament. This is fantastic for all golfers to follow and something you should start working on before spring rolls around and begin to play the golf courses in Muskoka.

However, most golfers are not very effective with their “mental practice” as it’s commonly called. They give it a short attempt at the advice of some pro on TV or in a magazine and then they give it up because they don’t see instant results.

What you want to do instead for your mental practice is to imagine that situation where you are under pressure…and the nerves come up….and you have a keyword or thought that you PRACTICE in your mind taking your nerves down.

In other words, you are mentally practicing getting control of your bodily state. If you were to do this a hundred times before the next real pressure putt, I would bet anything that you would actually be able to do this in reality and then truly, calmly go up there and putt like you know how without the tension.

Don’t Worry About Your Weaknesses

Forget that old school teaching that says you have to “identify your weaknesses.” You know darn well what holds you back in your game. Start focusing this round, for every shot on what you do well. ON WHAT WENT RIGHT! Build a storage of good things you are capable of to come back to time and time again.

When you do something bad, quickly analyze it for what can be learned AND THEN FORGET IT! FOREVER!

So start practicing this winter and preparing yourself for some fabulous rounds of golf and beating your personal best on some of Muskoka’s golf courses.
